Blog
Welcome to my shiny new website – I’m a lifelong lover of books and reading,
having
grown up without a television. My parents believed it damaging to young minds so I read voraciously
growing up, and still do.
I’ve also written all my life – as a frequent public speaker and broadcaster I wrote my own scripts,
have had some poetry published, and my first novel is coming out in November. It’s been a long
painful road and quite a few years getting to this point. “Frankie & Dot” is already available to
pre-order on Amazon.
I’ve been reading Kate Morton’s ‘Homecoming’ and found this gem at the beginning of chapter ten.
“The first and firmest human addiction is to narrative. People seek always to identify cause and
effect and then arrive at meaning.” I could sit with that thought for a long time because it
resonates with me so strongly, having searched for meaning all of my life. I’ve most of her work,
and she writes such satisfyingly FAT books that starting one is like getting to know new friends. It
will be a satisfyingly long read so I’ll let you know in a while what I think of it.
I’ve seen a few adverts lately mentioning 99p or free books on special offer and understand that
very often these are intended as loss leaders, perhaps to lead the reader to the author’s other
work. However, while I love a bargain as much as anyone else, when you consider that (mostly) a book
is the result of a year’s work by the author it doesn’t sit comfortably with me. To paraphrase… the
labourer is worthy of their hire.

I like to look for new authors on Book Guild and found you there. I’m intrigued – sounds like you’ve got lots of tales to tell – and looking forward to your novel dropping through the letterbox in November.
Thanks very much. Are you the Jay who used to podcast with Rachael Herron?
